If left untreated, an infected or damaged pulp can cause severe pain, abscess formation, and eventual tooth loss.

The endodontic treatment aims to remove the infected or inflamed pulp, disinfect the interior of the tooth, and seal it to prevent further infection or reinfection. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

Anesthesia: The endodontist administers local anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the treatment.

Access and Pulp Removal: The endodontist creates a small access opening in the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialised instruments, they carefully remove the infected or damaged pulp.

Cleaning and Shaping: The interior of the tooth, including the root canals, is thoroughly cleaned and shaped using specialised instruments. This step aims to remove bacteria, debris, and any remaining infected tissue.

Disinfection: The root canals are irrigated with antibacterial solutions to eliminate bacteria and reduce the risk of reinfection.

Filling and Sealing: After the canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha. The access opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.

Restoration: In most cases, a tooth that has undergone endodontic treatment requires a restoration, such as a dental crown, to provide protection and restore its functionality.

The endodontic treatment is typically performed over one or more visits, depending on the complexity of the case. The goal is to save the natural tooth and alleviate pain or discomfort while promoting oral health and function.

Endodontists may also specialise in other procedures related to the pulp and surrounding tissues, including endodontic re-treatment (repeating the root canal treatment if the initial treatment fails), apicoectomy (surgical removal of the tip of the tooth’s root), and management of dental trauma.
