Advanced gum disease sometime requires the dentist or dental hygienist to clean below the gum line to remove stubborn, crusty deposits called tartar or calculus, and to remove damage near the tooth root. This is done to prevent further damage and restore and stabilise the tooth.

For some patients, a local aenesthetic is administered to the affected area. Then, a small scaling instrument and/or ultrasonic cleaning device are used to remove the deposits.

After cleaning, the root may need to be smoothed, or planed, to restore it as much as possible to its original shape. Planing also allows your gum tissue to better attach itself and heal properly.

Zoom teeth whitening is an in-practice teeth whitening procedure that uses a specialised light to accelerate the bleaching process and achieve noticeable results in just one visit to the dentist. This method of teeth whitening is performed by a dental professional and is considered to be safe and effective for most people.

During the Zoom teeth whitening procedure, the dentist will first apply a protective gel to the gums and lips to prevent any irritation. Then, a specially formulated hydrogen peroxide gel will be applied to the teeth. A Zoom light will be directed at the teeth, which activates the gel and allows it to penetrate the enamel to break down stains and discolouration. The light will be used for a set amount of time, usually between 15-45 minutes, depending on the level of whitening desired.

After the procedure, the dentist will remove the gel and the protective barrier, and the patient will be able to see immediate results. The teeth can appear up to eight shades lighter than before the treatment.

A home teeth whitening kit is a type of teeth whitening treatment that is designed to be used in the comfort of your own home. These kits consist of a whitening gel or strips that are applied to the teeth, along with instructions for use.

The application process for home teeth whitening kits involves applying the whitening agent to the teeth for a set amount of time, usually for a few minutes to several hours each day or during the night.

The home whitening kits also include a tray that is custom-fitted to the shape of your teeth to help ensure even application of the whitening agent. Results are normally seen over 2 weeks and your teeth will also appear whiter and brighter.

Using a combination of home whitening and Zoom whitening may also be used. Our dentists will be able to explain the best option for you, during a consultation, which is required to prescribe a tooth whitening treatment.

Enlighten® teeth whitening is a professional teeth whitening treatment that is known for its ability to achieve dramatic results, even on teeth that are severely discoloured or stained. It is a combination of both in-practice and at-home teeth whitening techniques.

The treatment starts with an in-practice session, during which the dentist will take impressions of the teeth to create custom-fitted trays. These trays will be used to apply a whitening gel to the teeth during the at-home portion of the treatment.

The at-home portion of the treatment involves wearing the custom-fitted trays with the whitening gel for a specified amount of time, usually for several weeks.
